Royal experts believe King Charles may not get much rest anytime soon. After spending three days hosting Donald Trump during his recent U.K. state visit, the British monarch could soon be preparing for a trip to the United States.
According to The Daily Express U.S., Trump’s visit to London reportedly went so well that the former president wants to reciprocate by inviting King Charles and Queen Camilla to America. While such a visit would be historic for royal watchers, experts suggest it might be more exhausting than exciting for Charles himself.
Professor Pauline Maclaran of Royal Holloway told the outlet that the King may feel weary about another round of diplomacy. “My first thoughts poor Charles, having to show off his diplomacy again, just when he thought he could relax a bit,” she said, half-jokingly.
Maclaran noted that Trump’s unpredictability makes it difficult to know whether he will follow through, but added that he likely would: “My guess is he won’t be able to resist another opportunity to feature himself in the pomp and pageantry, even if it’s less colorful than what we saw in England. The visit will certainly draw attention, and Trump loves that.”
Other royal commentators believe the King would almost certainly accept. Brittani Barger, co-founder of Royal News, emphasized the importance of maintaining the “special relationship” between the U.S. and U.K. “In times such as these, it’s important that we stand together. A state visit is the perfect way to show that unity,” she explained.
There has never been a case of a British monarch turning down an American state visit. However, experts caution that King Charles’ health will be the deciding factor. Should he be unable to travel, Prince William and Princess Kate could step in, though the event would then be downgraded to an official visit rather than a full state visit.
For now, all eyes are on Buckingham Palace and the White House as the world waits to see whether King Charles will make his first official trip to the U.S. as monarch.
