Fox News commentator Jessica Tarlov argued that Donald Trump’s public criticism of Jimmy Kimmel may have backfired, ultimately strengthening the late-night host’s position instead of weakening it.
Speaking on The Five, Tarlov explained that Trump’s reaction to Kimmel’s recent suspension by ABC turned the situation into a free-speech debate that could actually protect Kimmel’s job.
Earlier this month, ABC suspended Kimmel over his controversial remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s killing. The host sparked backlash when he suggested that the suspect was aligned with Trump supporters, a claim later contradicted by Utah officials, who said the accused had far-left leanings.
The controversy deepened when FCC Chair Brendan Carr warned networks that the government could take action against Kimmel’s remarks. Though Carr later tried to soften his comments, Tarlov pointed out that Trump’s fiery response only amplified the appearance of political pressure.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that ABC had told the White House Kimmel’s show was cancelled, blasting the network for reinstating him.
But according to Tarlov, Trump’s attacks may have done the opposite of what he wanted:
“Trump has basically made Kimmel unfireable. Even if his ratings fall, Disney won’t be able to remove him now because he has become a symbol in the fight over the First Amendment and government interference,” she said.
Broadcast giants Sinclair and Nexstar reportedly pushed ABC to cut ties with Kimmel, but with Trump turning the debate into a high-profile political clash, Tarlov suggested the late-night host may now be safer than ever.
