Volodymyr Zelensky urges US response after deadly Russian strike leaves over 20 civilians dead
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly appealed for immediate US action following what he described as a “brutally savage” Russian strike that killed more than 20 civilians in Donetsk’s Yarova region.
The attack took place during a pension distribution, directly targeting ordinary residents. “At the very moment when pensions were being given out, Russia struck civilians,” Zelensky said in a statement, calling the assault another example of Moscow’s campaign of terror against Ukraine.
Donetsk governor Vadym Filashkin also condemned the strike, labeling it “pure terrorism.” Graphic footage of the aftermath has circulated widely online, amplifying global outrage.
Zelensky’s appeal was directed not only to Washington but also to Europe and G-20 nations. He stressed that stronger sanctions and coordinated action are needed to prevent further bloodshed.
This latest tragedy comes as NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte prepares for a defense summit in the UK, highlighting growing international pressure to reinforce support for Kyiv.
The White House has not yet issued an official response. However, President Donald Trump has previously stated that resolving the Ukraine conflict remains a top priority. He recently held direct talks with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, but the discussions ended without a ceasefire.
Speaking afterward, Zelensky criticized the talks, noting that Ukraine was excluded from the negotiations. “It’s a pity that Ukraine was not there, because I think President Trump gave Putin what he wanted,” he told ABC’s Martha Raddatz.
The remarks underscored rising tensions between Kyiv and Washington. Critics argue that Trump’s approach to Moscow risks sidelining Ukraine at a time when the country is enduring relentless missile strikes, ground assaults, and a worsening humanitarian crisis.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, tens of thousands have been killed, millions displaced, and entire towns destroyed. Despite Western sanctions, Moscow continues to find ways around restrictions, prolonging the war.
Zelensky’s message was clear: the world cannot afford silence. Stronger international unity, decisive sanctions, and concrete defense commitments are needed if Ukraine is to survive Russia’s ongoing offensive.
