Donald Trump made a headline-grabbing appearance at the Ryder Cup in New York, drawing loud cheers from Team USA fans while standing behind bulletproof glass.
Trump attended the event at Bethpage Black on September 26 with his granddaughter, Kai, 18, and was greeted with chants of “USA” from an enthusiastic crowd. He positioned himself behind bulletproof glass about 20 feet from the players’ entrance tunnel, walking past a line of dignitaries before the national anthem was played.
Social media users were quick to react. Some joked that Trump might be the first person ever to watch the Ryder Cup from behind bulletproof glass. Others highlighted the over-the-top atmosphere, noting fighter planes flying overhead, the hooting crowd, and the national anthem all adding to the spectacle.
Tight security surrounded the event. In addition to the bulletproof glass, authorities deployed drones, bomb-disposal dogs, and radiological units. Spectators faced restrictions, being barred from bringing items such as laptops, coolers, ladders, knives, and even golf clubs, with tickets priced at around $750 each.
This was not Trump’s first public appearance behind bulletproof glass. Last summer, he was injured during an attempted assassination at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, leaving him with a bloodied ear. The shooter, Ryan Routh, was found guilty on all charges this week, prompting continued protective measures at outdoor events.
The high-profile security context follows a string of violent incidents at public gatherings, including the recent fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.
Trump’s presence at the Ryder Cup underscored both the popularity he continues to command among supporters and the heightened security risks faced by high-profile political figures today.
Failure of basic fact checking. The Pennsylvania shooter was killed on scene. Ryan Routh fled the scene in Florida without firing a shot. Conflating assailants. Please get your facts straight.
